6th Grade LASS Mr. Butler UNIT 2 Schedule Activities and Due Dates

Our Year’s Themes These themes should guide your learning throughout the year “My Learning” Themes 1. I own my learning, not my parents, not my teacher, not my peers. 2. My primary goal in school should be to GROW as a learner. “My World” Themes We must study the past in order to help us build the future we want. History starts when somebody writes down what happened. But how accurate are they? “My Voice” Themes 1. Reading deeply takes special skills and leads to the respect of peers. 2. If you want to be heard, know what you’re talking about. Read. Research. 3. Writing that is worth reading takes time and criticism. 4. English is a difficult language to learn. You have to work at it.

Unit 2 Goals October 10th to November 18th “My Learning” Goals I will work towards mature behavior. I can identify the key elements of work habits, initiative, citizenship and collaboration. “My World” Goals I can compare and contrast river civilizations. I can harvest information from a textbook and use it. “My Voice” Goals I can analyze narrative text for signposts. I can use reading workshop conferences to be a better reader. I will write with purpose and focus for 10 minutes every day. I can write a story that other people really want to read.

Week #1 10/10 to 10/14 Learning Targets – I Can… “My Learning” … define maturity. “My World” … tell The Story of River Civilizations like Mesopotamia. … identify the important details for my Cornell notes. “My Voice” - Reading … name the 6 signposts. … discuss my reading with Mr. Butler during a conference. “My Voice” - Writing … write for 5 minutes with sustained focus every day. … define and identify snapshots, thoughtshots and dialogue.
