Specifics 23 events Saturday February 10, 20178 at UCI Students will be competing in groups of 2. Students should sign-up by choosing an initial direction Only15 students allowed on the final team.

Science Process Skills 2018 Division B Events For the 2018 Division B events go to my school website for the link The following are categories of events: Life Science Earth Science Physical Science Engineering Science Process Skills

Engineering/ BUILDING EVENTS

Towers Prior to the competition, teams will design and build a Tower meeting requirements specified in these rules to achieve the highest structural efficiency.

Wright Stuff Free flight rubber powered monoplane Goal: Achieve Maximum time aloft

Hovercraft Participants will be tested on their knowledge of classical mechanics and related topics as well as their ability to construct a self-propelled air-levitated vehicle that moves down a track.

Battery Buggy Teams will construct a vehicle that uses electrical energy as its sole means of propulsion, quickly travels a specified distance, and stops as close as possible to the Finish Point.

Roller Coaster Prior to the competition, teams design, build, and test a Roller Coaster track to guide a vehicle that uses gravitational potential energy as its sole means of propulsion to travel as close as possible to a target time.

Thermodynamics Teams must construct an insulating device prior to the tournament that is designed to retain heat and complete a written test on thermodynamic concepts.

PERFORMANCE EVENTS

Fast Facts Teams will fill in a grid of terms that begin with a given letter to match given science categories Category Scientist Element Unit of Measure Type of Landform Part of a Cell   A Avogadro Aluminum Ampere B Niels Bohr Boron Butte C Marie Curie Carbon Calorie Canyon Cytoplasm D Darwin Dubnium Dram

Optics Teams will participate in an activity involving positioning mirrors to direct a laser beam towards a target. They will also be tested on their knowledge of geometric and physical optics.

Write it do it One student will write a description of an object and how to build it, and then the other student will attempt to construct the object from this description.

Mystery Architecture At the beginning of the event, teams will be given a bag of building materials and instructions for designing and building a device that can be tested.

Potions and Poisons This event is about chemical properties and effects of specified toxic and therapeutic chemical substances, with a focus on household and environmental toxins or poisons.

Experimental Design Students will design, conduct, and report the findings of an experiment that you conduct on site. This is a team of 3.

Crime Busters Students will be given a scenario, a collection of evidence and possible suspects and they will use that information to perform a series of tests in order to solve a crime.

Road Scholar - Being able to draw and read maps. Students will be given directions and they need to find a location using maps. Highway and topographic maps may be from one or more states The event may be presented in a storyline format May be asked to draw features located within a square section on answer sheet using correct features from Testing Area (presented in next few slides) Participants may be asked to draw a topographic map profile that will be included on the answer sheet.

These events require studying and practicing tests. Study Events These events require studying and practicing tests.

Herpetology This event will test knowledge of amphibians and reptiles.

Meteorology: Climate and Climate Change

Microbe Mission Teams will answer questions, solve problems, and analyze date pertaining to microbes.

Rocks and Minerals Teams will demonstrate their knowledge of rocks and minerals

Disease Detectives Study Event Participants will use their investigative skills in the scientific study of disease, injury, health, and disability in populations or groups of people with a focus on Food Borne Illnes.

(Large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth’s crust) Dynamic Planet (Large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth’s crust)

Ecology Deserts, Grasslands, and Human Impact.

Anatomy (Respiratory, Digestive, & Immune System)

The Solar System Study Event – Students will demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the geologic characteristics and evolution of the Earth’s moon and other rocky bodies of the solar system.
