Maths Term 3 Week 3 Learning objectives: To compare and measure weights using non-standard uniform units. To compare weights using direct comparison. To read, interpret and begin to create a simple block graph. To read and enter data into tables. To solve mental maths problems. To compare, describe and solve practical problems involving capacities. To directly compare the capacities of two containers by pouring one into the other.   To interpret and complete block graphs where 1 block represents 1 item.

Lesson 1 - Mental maths time! (Target Board 5)

Bigger/smaller game – Listen to your teacher. Your teacher is going to pass around a bag of flour and a bag of cotton wool. Which one is light? Which one is heavy? Let’s place them on the scales. The heavier object will go down. The lighter object will go up.

Let’s look at this stone Let’s look at this stone. Even though it is smaller than the cotton wool bag it is heavier. Let’s put the stone and the cotton wool bag in the balance. What do you think will happen? TTYP Now we are going to create a human balance. Listen to your teacher! Remember to use our new words for this week – Heavy, heavier and heaviest Light, lighter and lightest.

Task time! (Whole class Activity)

Recap! What did we learn in our maths lesson today? Your teacher is going to pass around a book. Can you think of anything in our classroom that is heavier than this book? Let’s test it using the bucket balance. Now find two things lighter than the book and repeat!

Lesson 2 - Mental maths time! (Target board 5)

Higher and lower game – listen to your teacher! Your teacher is going to pass around a banana, apple and orange. Which do you think is the heaviest? Which do you think is the lightest? Its tricky to find out the answer using a bucket balance because there are 3 different fruits but only 2 buckets! How could we figure it out? We will see how many cubes weigh the same as each fruit!

We are going to write the results in this table We are going to write the results in this table. Writing it down in this table will help us to remember! Apple Banana Orange cubes

Task time! (Whole Class Activity)

Block graph We are going to complete a block graph. Let’s review our table (slide 9) Each block represents one cube, so this lets us easily see and compare the weight of each fruit. Questions for the block graph Which fruit is the heaviest? Which fruit is the lightest? Do any of the fruits weight the same amount of cubes? By how many more cubes is the heaviest fruit heavier than the lightest fruit?

She only knows how to count in 10’s. Watch her move on the 100 square! Can we count in 10’s to 100? Let’s use Sally the spider to help us.

Let’s look at Sally’s shop! The webs with blue prices have taken her longer to make than she thought so she is going to put all these prices up by 10p. The webs with orange prices are old stock so she is going to reduce those prices by 10p. Group activity time! Listen to your teacher! Pair task – Can you guess your partner’s number? You are both going to have a 100 square. A picks a number and must give B clues so they can try and guess the number.

Task time! 3 stars complete all 2 stars complete 6 1 star complete 4

Let’s recap! Teacher Ms. Class 1 What did we learn in our maths lesson today? Guess the number game – teacher vs class. Teacher Ms. Class 1

Lesson 5 - Problem solving! Count in 2’s to 20. Continue the pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, __, __, __, __ Close your eyes, can you count the number of coins that I am dropping into the tin? How many socks are there altogether?

problem solving True or False? I start at 2 and count in twos. I will say the number 9. I am going to count on in twos from 3. Will I say an even number? Prove it. I am going to count back in twos from 20. How many steps will it take me to reach 0? Convince me. Fill in the missing numbers.

problem solving 1.There are 2 flowers in each pot. How many flowers in 10 pots? 2. If there were 2 of every animal below in a zoo, how many animals are in the zoo altogether?
