Action Plan Development

Where the rubber meets the road What is an Action Plan? An Action Plan operationalizes the Strategic Objectives A short-term plan- 30-days to 2-years Focused at multiple levels within the Institution Resourced to move the needle Where the rubber meets the road

What Composes an Action Plan? A SMART Objective is: Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely Clearly defined objective and outcome Fully developed performance measures A lofty goal but not over the top Supported by the leadership and resourced Given a start and an end date

How to Get There? Read and understand the objective Identify activities that will help achieve the most bang for the buck Establish a list of tasks Create a timeline Identify a budget Select measures Create a communication plan Maintain alignment

What does a Completed Action Plan Look like? See handout Important to Remember: Think university wide and work your way down Keep the goal in mind- gradual growth, not an overnight accomplishment Don’t let “We’ve always done it this way” syndrome stifle your imagination You’re in a safe place in here– let the ideas flow

ISU’s Strategic Objectives Goal #5: Enhance Community Partnerships Objective: By 2022, ISU will establish (# TBD) new partnerships within its service regions and statewide program responsibilities to support the resolution of community-oriented, real-world concerns. Operational Strategies Partnerships will encompass a broad variety of relationships including academic to academic, ISU to business, and ISU to non-profit Encourage colleges to track and promote these partnerships Increase internship/clinical opportunities with collaborators in our service areas Identify and design educational programs that provide a service to the communities that ISU doesn’t currently partner with Work with communities that have limited services and develop opportunities to create new partnerships

What’s Next? Using operational strategies, individuals will brainstorm one or two ideas for an action plan- 5 mins Each table will discuss the action plans ideas & list them on their board (no duplicates)- 15 mins Each table will present their ideas to the larger group- 30 mins The group will select 4-6 action plans to fully develop over the next four sessions- 20 mins
