Today we are going to learn: How to talk about future predictions using will and might/may

Prediction = what we think will happen in the future Make a prediction Come true

T: I think there will be more robots in the world and they will be doing different jobs, but people will also work a lot. Y: Do you think people will use special computers to understand other languages? T: They might do that, but I hope they won’t. Learning languages is so interesting and useful. Y: I agree.

To make a negative statement use ‘will + not + infinitive’ To say what events you predict in the future use ‘will + infinitive’ It usually combines with phrases such: I think, I predict, I believe, I guess I think the weather will be good tomorrow. Oliver thinks we will all go to live on Mars in 50 years’ time. To make a negative statement use ‘will + not + infinitive’ We won’t find another planet like Earth soon.. Will not = won’t Won’t ≠ want I think they won’t come to the meeting. I don’t think they will come to the meeting.

- Tamara, what will your life be like in twenty years’ time? If we are not sure what will happen in the future we can use ‘may’ or ‘might’ - Tamara, what will your life be like in twenty years’ time? I am not sure. I might become a film star. In the future people might use special equipment to understand different languages. We don’t usually use ‘might/may’ in questions. We make questions with ‘will’ instead. - Will people live on Mars? - They might.

Match the questions about the future with answers: Where will you live in five year’s time? Do you believe people will live on another planet? Do you believe people will stop learning languages in the future? Will you move to an English speaking country within the next two years? Do you think people won’t need to work in the future? a.
