How well do you feel you are able to do this? Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Brain warmer “The ever-changing and diverse backgrounds of learners, along with the challenges these present, mean understanding learners individually is the best way to support them to succeed”. (Stork & Walker, 2015) How well do you feel you are able to do this? Thinking point 1 Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Staff Development Programme Book Improving student performance Academic Research Our Story: Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Outstanding personal tutoring Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance “The personal tutor is one who improves the intellectual and academic ability, and nurtures the emotional well-being, of learners through individualised, holistic support.” Student success Outstanding teaching Outstanding personal tutoring Stork & Walker (2015) Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Personal tutoring practice Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Personal tutoring practice Core values and skills Setting boundaries Key activities and procedures Reflective practice Observation Measuring impact Professional development One to one tutorials Solution-focused coaching Key characteristics Research Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Research – overview The impact of one to one conversations and a specific coaching technique. Focus groups and questionnaires (x3 - 3 month period - beginning, middle and end) with 14 tutor groups. We asked learners what was helpful about their one to one coaching conversations with their personal tutor and why. In learner-friendly language, we asked them about the effect on their academic performance and emotional wellbeing. 7 tutorial groups were questioned on how helpful the tool of scaling was for them on the above. Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

The impact of scaling as a technique was not statistically significant Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Research – findings The impact of scaling as a technique was not statistically significant One to one tutorials really valuable Approach most had not experienced before Equal partner not superior approach Feelings elicited: trustworthiness, friendliness, motivation, being appreciated, relaxed Negative emotions could be offloaded Look forward and identify areas for development Two way conversation Most useful when used with SMART targets Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Measuring Impact “The personal tutor is one who improves the intellectual and academic ability, and nurtures the emotional well-being, of learners through individualised, holistic support.” Thinking Point 2 What are all the ways you think these elements can be measured? Intellectual and academic ability – attainment, assessment scores, module grades Emotional wellbeing – can be more difficult to measure. However, methods include: results of questionnaires, use of scaling, focus groups Importance of timescale and comparison Ben Walker & Andrew Stork

Institutional personal tutoring systems Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Scholarly activity on personal tutoring and coaching and its impact on student performance Institutional personal tutoring systems Generally, institutions organise their personal tutoring in the following ways: Centralised system = Scholarly activity? Better KPIs? Traditional Centralised Hybrid Teaching staff have personal tutoring as part of their overall role and deliver tutorials and support. A specialised and dedicated team of non-teaching staff (for example, ‘super tutors’) deliver tutorials and support. A mixture of the traditional and centralised models. Ben Walker & Andrew Stork
