COMPONENTS OF FITNESS Part Four Remember it can show many… All components are linked Which main component of fitness do you think these pictures show?

THE RANGE OF MOTION POSSIBLE AROUND A JOINT ROM FLEXIBILITY THE RANGE OF MOTION POSSIBLE AROUND A JOINT ROM

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? normal range of motion ROM (Range Of Movement) is based upon our anatomy and the FUNCTION of each joint Each joint has a normal range of motion which maintains stability during movement

can be just as harmful as TOO MUCH ROM in a joint can be just as harmful as TOO LITTLE ROM and result in Joint instability Dislocations Injury THIS IS REALLY DANGEROUS!!

Physical limits to range of motion are determined by Our skeleton Joint type – e.g. hinge / ball & socket Ligaments Tendons Muscles

Having flexibility in your muscles guided by a GOOD teacher allows for MORE MOVEMENT AROUND JOINTS you can achieve this with a basic SAFE stretching workout guided by a GOOD teacher

to increase flexibility Stretching after your dance class when your muscles are warm and supple is a great way to increase flexibility and keep your body protected from injury

Dance requires a great amount of flexibility Dancers must strive to achieve a full range of motion for ALL THE MAJOR MUSCLE GROUPS The greater the range of motion the more muscles can flex and extend

EVERY JOINT NEEDS FLEXIBILITY SHOULDERS SPINE HIPS KNEES ANKLES

How to achieve it … RELAX AND BREATHE and not bouncing (ballistic) Stretching should always be done in a 'static' manner and not bouncing (ballistic) Take your body as far as you can in the stretch and then hold it RELAX AND BREATHE into your stretches

WHY DO WE NEED IT … It is an effective way to prevent injuries It is an essential element for getting positions and movements correct It allows for freedom of movement It adds grace & ease to your movements It is an effective way to prevent injuries

Dancers should always aim to balance their with to develop a range flexibility training with strength training to develop a range of motion and stability

by stretching regularly Like brushing your teeth… Developing flexibility in your muscles & joints can only be achieved by stretching regularly i.e. DAILY!! Like brushing your teeth…

FLEXIBLE STRONG DANCERS DEFINITELY HAVE MORE FUN!!!!

Do more today than you did yesterday and do more tomorrow than you did today FLEXIBILITY = RANGE OF MOVEMENT
