What is the difference between geography & history? The study of people, their environments, and their resources. An account of what has happened in the lives of different people.

Location

What is LOCATION? Asking: Where did that happen?? EXACT LOCATION: The absolute location of a place (latitude & longitude, address) RELATIVE LOCATION: Where something is in relation to something else.

LOCATION examples The movie theater is one mile south of my house. EXACT LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION The movie theater is one mile south of my house. Phoenix is 33 * north latitude & 112* west longitude

Place

What is PLACE?? A more detailed description of a location. PHYSICAL FEATURES: climate, soil, animal life, bodies of water, etc. HUMAN FEATURES: kinds of houses, means of transportation, ways of earning a living, languages, religions, etc.

PLACE examples PHYSICAL HUMAN Tropical Climate Near the Atlantic Ocean Has a lot of insects and rodents Condos, Apartments, One & Two-Story Houses Speak English Drive cars, ride busses, ride bikes

Human-Environment Interaction

What is INTERACTION?? How people adapt to and change their natural environment. Has both positive & negative effects on the environment. EXAMPLES: Preservation of national parks, Tearing down farm land to build a mall.

Movement

What is MOVEMENT?? Movement of people, goods, & ideas. People move from place to place to get what they want or need. EXAMPLES: Moving from Illinois to Arizona for a job, Belief that slavery is wrong moved from Europe to the United States.

Region

What is REGION?? An area of the world that has similar characteristics (physical, human, or cultural) Can be any size!!! EXAMPLES: Southern Arizona = desert climate Chinatown = same culture, dress, traditions Amish Community = same dress, same religious beliefs, same ways to earn money.
