Gender Equity.... Games and recreation of all types for girls, by all means, which develop charm and social health, but athletic competition in basketball, track and field, and baseball? No Frederick R. Rodgers

The problem I had in Wilmington was the girls in school The problem I had in Wilmington was the girls in school...'Look at her throwin that ball just like a man,' they would say, and they looked at me just like I was a freak...I felt as though they ought to see that I didn't do the things they did because I didn't know how to and that I showed off on the football field...to show there was something I was good at. Althea Gibson Misconceptions

Title IX.... ...no person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, be treated differently from another person or otherwise be discriminated against in any interscholastic, intercollegiate, club, or intramural athletic program offered by a recipient (Section 86:41a).

The price paid here on the Palouse Sue Durrant/ WSU Ginny Wolf / Idaho – Yearly recognition of her dedication Dorothy Zakrajsek Bonnie Hultstrand Kathy Clark

Three Tier Points Having the same proportion of women playing sports as are enrolled as undergraduates. Having a history and continuing practice of expanding programs for women. Demonstrating that the women's sports program fully and effectively accommodates the interests of female students and potential students.

New Interpretation (1) unmet interest sufficient to sustain a varsity team in the sport(s); (2) sufficient ability to sustain an intercollegiate team in the sport(s); and (3) reasonable expectation of intercollegiate competition for a team in the sport(s) within the school's normal competitive region."

Christine Grant, Ad Iowa 1995…a little old, but you’ll get the idea. http://bailiwick.lib.uiowa.edu/ge/CHBGrant/present.html 2005 – women’s sport foundation http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/issues/rights/index.html

Varied Interpretations... Women are entitled to the same respect and concern as men in seeking excellence through the challenge of excellence in athletic competition.

Requirements of equity Does sex equality simply require nondiscrimination? Should coaches simply pick the best players, regardless of sex?

?????s Does sex equality simply require nondiscrimination? Should coaches simply pick the best players, regardless of sex?

Jane English Should there be the introduction of new sports OR other activities in which women may have the physiological advantage?

Assimilation versus Pluralism Sex equality and Sex Blindness (Assimilation) Does sex equality require Equality and Equivalent Opportunities (Pluralism)

To Remember? The operative principles: equal concern and respect for all participants...may justify differences in treatments including expenditures. Equal respect and concern are compatible with recognition of difference.

Remember... Difference does not necessarily require dominance and subordination. Sex equality does not require forgetting sex.

Pluralism Recognizes Significance and Value of differences: but places non above the other.

Feminism… Failing at Fairness: Myra and David Sadker Negative comments and works about Feminism.. Christina Hoff Sommers, “The War Against Boys” “Who Stole Feminism”
