DIEGO VELAZQUEZ – 1599- 1660 Baroque Artist for the Spanish King and Queen
Las Meninas A very mysterious painting…
At first glance, it seems like the painting is about Princess Margarita who is in the center of the painting. She is painted with her ladies in waiting – las meninas – servants, guards, dog, etc. They all seem to be tending to her needs.
BUT Where is everyone looking BUT Where is everyone looking? Looking closer, most figures aren’t looking at her, but ahead of them. Who are they looking at?
What could be in front of them. Who are they facing. US What could be in front of them? Who are they facing? US! But look at the reflection in the mirror at the back of the room…
Look at the reflection in the mirror at the back of the room… That is the reflection of the King and Queen, Princess Margarita’s parents. Velazquez painted them in the same location we would be standing – he’s allowing the viewer to be the same status as a King and Queen. VERY controversial in these times!
Now take a look to the left… who is that? What is he holding?
It’s Velazquez, the painter It’s Velazquez, the painter! He painted himself into this royal portrait – AND he painted himself taller than all of the royals!
We cannot see what he is painting. What do you think is on his canvas?
