Having an Ultrasound Scan Section 4

What is an Ultrasound Scan? An Ultrasound is a special scanning machine An Ultrasound scanning machine lets the Doctors and Nurses have a look inside your breast It doesn’t hurt at all!

Who will I see? A Nurse will tell you about the Ultrasound scan You can ask her questions A Doctor will come to look at your breast He or she will need to touch your breasts This is ok

Can I take someone with me? You may be able to take a friend, support worker or family member with you You can ask one of the staff if that is ok!

What will I be asked? In the Ultrasound room the nurse will ask you your: Name Date of birth (birthday) She will tell you why you have come for the test You can ask her any questions

Doing the Ultrasound Scan The Doctor will put some gel onto your breast The gel is just like a clear cream. It might feel cold! It doesn’t hurt at all!

Doing the Ultrasound Scan The Doctor will place a probe on your breast A probe looks like this The Doctor will gently move it around This should not hurt but it might feel a bit strange

Doing the Ultrasound The Ultrasound scan shows a picture of the inside of you breast This can be seen on the screen You can ask questions about it and talk to the Doctor if you want

What happens next ? You can wipe the gel off The Nurse will give you some tissue She will take you back to the waiting area You can have a rest and wait The Doctor and Nurse will ask you back into the room and explain if you can go or need further tests
