WELCOME! Art I Pre-AP 2016-2017 Ms. Hinojosa shinoj1@neisd.net Roosevelt High School Art Department Art I Overview This course is directed towards highly motivated art students who are looking for a more in-depth and challenging approach to art. Students should have previous art experience. This course will provide the foundation for upper level studio courses, including AP Art. Students will study the elements of art and principles of design, applying them to a variety of art media and techniques. Students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, while developing an understanding of art through art history and art criticism. Ms. Hinojosa shinoj1@neisd.net Rm AS105 Expectations Supplies: Please bring a pencil to class each day! A $30 Supply Fee includes studio colored pencils, clay, and glazes. See note. Follow all classroom, school, and district rules and regulations. BE RESPECTFUL: Treat others and our environment with respect. BE RESPONSIBLE and SAFE: Follow directions. Handle materials properly. Take care of your work and work area. BE DILIGENT: Come to class on time and stay on task. Believe in yourself—don’t give up! BE POSITIVE: Show compassion and kindness. Keep an open mind! BE ORIGINAL: Do your own work. Studio Ground Rules: Be in class on time. No food or drinks allowed at the work area. No meals in class. No electronics without teacher permission. No photos/recording in class. Clean up after yourself. Do not wait at the door before the end of class. Grading Policy Studio Projects (2-3 per 9 Weeks) 40% Class work (sketches, notes, exercises) 30% Art Criticism/Quizzes/Tests 30% Total: 100% Conduct and Consequences --Warning/Redirection --Private student conference --Parent phone call --Counselor/Administrator referral --Parent/teacher conference Art I Course Outline ●Introduction to art ● Art functions/Art Criticism ●Elements of Art ●Principles of Design ●Art history/Contemporary art ●Art careers (focus on graphic design and architecture) Studio Projects (as time permits) 2-D Techniques: 3-D Techniques: Drawing: (black/white value and color) Mixed-media Design and Pattern Paper Mache with armatures Direct observation/Still life /Landscape /Portraiture Ceramics (clay) Painting: Pastel/Watercolor /Acrylic Printmaking (block print and silkscreen) Studio Projects will develop: ●Design & Techniques ●Direct Observation Skills ●Narrative/Artistic Voice Contests and Exhibitions Pre AP Art I students are highly encouraged to participate in both contest and exhibit opportunities. Sample contests: Congressional, PTA Reflections, Fire Prevention, Battle of Flowers, Scholastic, and VASE. Sample exhibitions: Night Gallery, SHARE, and Evening with TR Artists.
