Reading Benchmark Assessments One-On-One TPRI (Texas Primary Reading Inventory) Fountas and Pinnell Reading Inventory One-On-One Conversations during whole group, guided reading, Read to Self, Read to Someone, etc. Small Group (6 children, maximum) Guided Reading: decoding and comprehension strategies practiced with text on child’s instructional level. Whole Group Mini-lesson: provides opportunities for teachers to think aloud and teach/model how strategies are used to make sense of text.

Language Arts Phonics Word Study Word Study (Spelling) Grammar Whole Group: mini-lessons daily for 10-15 minutes Small Group: word work during guided reading, Word Work stations Word Study (Spelling) A new spelling pattern will be sent in the newsletter each Friday, with the addition of two sight words. The goal is for students to master the spelling pattern, or word family. Word Study tests will be given as a class on Fridays. Grammar Taught, incorporated and reinforced in Writer’s Workshop.

Writer’s Workshop Whole Group One-On-One What is Writer’s Workshop? Daily mini-lesson for 10-15 minutes. Writing is modeled and taught by classroom teacher. One-On-One Conferences with individual writers weekly. Allows for differentiation. What is Writer’s Workshop? The child constructs the story independently. Sight words and words on the word wall should be spelled conventionally. Unknown words should be spelled phonetically. Focus is on process of writing and developing the student as a writer.

Mathematics Benchmark Assessments One-On-One TEMI (Texas Early Mathematics Inventory) One-On-One Math conferences Small Group (6 children, maximum) Guided Math: focus on numeracy, review/reteach Whole Group Calendar Math, Number of the Day, daily mini-lesson Math Stations Spiral review of all math content strands

Science & Social Studies Integrated into all other content areas. Using interactive notebooks (science) and weekly readers (Social Studies). Lessons will be taught whole group and reinforced in small groups. The Science Lab will provide hands-on learning each week.

Graded papers will be sent home in the PAWS folder. Assessments Student work and samples collected daily. Used to guide teaching and make instructional decisions. Checked but not always used for formal grading purposes. Graded papers will be sent home in the PAWS folder.

Home Learning Homework includes nightly reading, reading comprehension choice board and word study practice. Homework is an extension of classwork and should be completed relatively independently. Reading Log Note It should take no longer than 20-30 minutes. A schedule and/or homework routine is beneficial. Please let me know if your child is having difficulty with any homework!

Classroom Management Your child’s education, safety and success is of the utmost importance to me! My goal is to help teach your child to make the right decisions and use good judgement in their actions so that they may become responsible, kind, and thoughtful citizens at CCE and beyond. I will guide them to take responsibility for their own actions and behaviors through conversations, logical consequences and other measures.

Lunch Our lunch is: 11:05-11:35 You are welcome to join your child for lunch! Please sign in at the front office first. Please send lunch money in a bag or envelope marked with name, grade and teacher. Lunch for students: $2.30 Ice Cream: $1.00 (Tuesdays only)

Nurse Notes Must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please send a change of clothes to be kept in student’s locker in case of a spill or accident.
