What is theme? A theme is a broad message or moral of the story. The message may be about life, society, or human nature. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas. Themes are almost always implied rather than stated explicitly.

How do You Discover Theme? Theme can be discovered only by becoming aware of the relationships among the parts of a story. These include: Characters Plot Author’s Point of View

Discovering Theme Characters What kind of people does the story have? Why do the characters behave as they do?

Discovering Theme Plot What do the characters do? Are they in control of their lives, or are they controlled by fate?

Discovering Theme Point of View What is the author's point of view towards his subject? What are the values of the characters in the story?  What values does the author seem to promote?
