1. Description of S’Cool LAB S'Cool LAB is a hands-on teaching facility in 143-R-003 at CERN with a fully equipped modular laboratory of 200m2 (Figure 1). Figure 1 - Map of S’Cool LAB in building 143

2. Applications and bookings All Workshops in S'Cool LAB will be managed only by the S'Cool LAB team (scoollab-admin@cern.ch). School groups can only apply via the S'Cool LAB website http://cern.ch/s- cool-lab. For detailed Information about the booking or application process, please have a look at the “S'Cool LAB Guidelines”. When a workshop request is accepted, it will be registered in the Visits Agenda https://publicoutreach.cern.ch. Accessible on the S’Cool LAB sharepoint http://cern.ch/scoollab-inside. 3. Specific rules for workshops in S’Cool LAB 3.1 Capacity Groups of 36 participants maximum are accepted, accompanied by at least one official S'Cool LAB tutor. The recommended number of participants is 24. 3.2 Safety first All (safety) instructions shall be presented clearly by the tutors and followed strictly by all participants and all tutors.

3.3 General laboratory rules S'Cool LAB is a laboratory, therefore it is strictly forbidden to eat, drink or smoke inside the lab. The corridor in front of the lab shall be used for breaks. Cameras are of course highly welcome 3.4 Minors and pregnant women Although there are radioactive preparations, S’Cool LAB is not a supervised area. Therefore there is no general restriction for pregnant women and minors. Nevertheless pregnant tutors are not allowed to supervise experiments which include radioactive preparations or X-Rays, pregnant participants shall not handle radioactive preparations.

3.5 Bags To avoid accidents, all bags and jackets shall be stored inside the indicated shelf or at the wardrobe in the corridor (Figure 3).

3.6 Microphones To make sure everybody can understand the instructions, tutors need to keep in mind that the room is really big and it is therefore recommended to use a microphone. 3.7 Tidiness To facilitate cleaning, chairs must be put on tables after the workshop. Tutors shall remind the participants to clean their shoes if they enter from the outside and leave the room tidy. 3.8 Reports All problems or accidents shall be reported to scoollab-admin@cern.ch (e.g. empty alcohol containers, disturbances, IT problems …).

4. How to become an official S’Cool LAB tutor Workshops can only be led by official S'Cool LAB tutors. To become an official S'Cool LAB tutors the following steps are mandatory: a) To have taken the following CERN safety courses: - Electrical Hazards COURELE - RP supervised area COURRP - Sensibilisation Risque Chimique COURSRCHIM - Highly recommended: fire extinguisher course - Highly recommended: first aid course See Safety Information Registration on http://sir.cern.ch See CERN training catalogue on https://cta.cern.ch

4. How to become an official S’Cool LAB tutor b) To have a personal dosimeter and to wear it during the workshops, which include radioactive preparations or X-Ray units. c) To have followed the on-site training for general safety in S’Cool LAB. d) To have followed the on-site training for the specific experimental setting e.g. Cloud Chamber, Electron tubes, X-Rays e) To have been granted access to S'Cool LAB equipment in EDH (Request access to 0143K1-001 (S'Cool LAB experiments)) f) To have observed ("shadowed") one workshop led by an experienced S'Cool LAB tutor. Training sessions will be announced via the INDICO category for S’Cool LAB: https://indico.cern.ch/category/5887/. Since the number of participants for all trainings is limited, registration is necessary.

5. Emergency situations All tutors must know the following: Where are the emergency exits? Where is the assembly point? Where is the first aid box? Where are the emergency stops to cut the power? Where is the IP phone and which number do I call in case of an emergency? Where are the rest rooms (hand wash possibility)? Which are possible hazards of the experiment the participants perform?

5.3. Possible hazards of the experiments Every experiment is connected to specific hazards due to e.g.: - Dangerous voltages - Chemicals - Cryogenics - Lasers - Radioactive preparations - X-Rays - Evacuated glass tubes - … Tutors must be aware of all risks and need to know, what to do in case of an emergency. Before starting the experiments, tutors need to instruct the participants on possible hazards. During the workshop, they supervise the participants and make sure that they follow the instructions.

Additional keys for the cupboards in the room can be obtained from the TRAKA key box inside the room. All keys are marked with colours according to the locks they will open. - White: normal cupboards without colour label - Red: IT rack inside the teacher table - Blue: most drawers in teacher table - Yellow: X-Ray "elephants" - Black: X-Ray drawers + PHYWE Cloud Chamber

7. Schedule of workshops in S’Cool LAB a) Subscribe to be a tutor in a session via the Visits Agenda https://publicoutreach.cern.ch b) Pick up the room key in the visit service office 33/R-004 during working hours. (Another spare key can be found in 3/R-002, Julia Woithe tel. 16 6539)

7. Schedule of workshops in S’Cool LAB c) Prepare the room for the workshop (approx. 10 min.) - Get a bunch of keys from the TRAKA key box. - Open the IT drawer in the teacher table (red key). - Use the touchpad to start the presentation mode. - Start standard safety presentation from the USB stick that is connected to the room PC (S’Cool LAB presentations (E:)). - Switch on light spots for the tables. d) Welcome your group at the reception. e) Guide the group to S'Cool LAB.

Schedule of workshops in S’Cool LAB f) Have them sit down. g) Introduce yourself and other tutors. h) Explain the schedule. i) Present safety information using the standard presentation . j) Divide the group into subgroups if necessary. k) Let the participants store their bags and jackets inside the designated shelf. l) Enjoy your workshop! m) Finish your workshop in time. n) Make sure everything is tidied up and nothing is missing.

Schedule of workshops in S’Cool LAB o) Ask participants to put the chairs back on the tables. p) Say good bye to the participants. q) Switch off the IT system (touchpad  “Switch off the system”) r) Make sure all cupboards are locked. s) Make sure you have put all keys back to the TRAKA. t) Lock the door towards the corridor. u) Bring back the room key.
