Mitotic Index & Cancer. Mitotic Definition The mitotic index is the ratio between the number of cells in mitosis in a tissue & the total number of observed.
Aim: What happens if the rate of mitosis is abnormal? Do Now: Describe the process of mitosis? What has to happen to the chromosomes before a cell dovides?
Cancer Catalyst Fill in the blanks: In mitosis, cells divide ___ time to produce ___ cells that are __________. What is cancer? How do people get cancer?
Cancer Objective What is Cancer? Cancer is uncontrolled cell growth. (Mitosis) When you are young, your cells grow fast so because you are growing.

Presentation transcript:

MITOSIS GONE WRONG-CANCER • ncontrolled, unregulated growth of cells • cells divide at a much faster rate than normal cell The diagram illustrates a skin melanoma

What are Key Terms Associated with Cancer Malignant tumour- cancerous tumour Benign tumour (non cancerous tumour) Metastasis-spreading of cancer through lymphatic/circulatory system Oncogene- a gene that is linked to cancer Oncologist- a doctor who treats cancer patients Biopsy- a sample of tissue that is taken from the body Oncolytic Virus- a virus that can treat cancer by destroying cancerous cells

some cancers grow very slow and may even stop for years Cancer cells can divide on their own (unlike normal cells) some cancers grow very slow and may even stop for years don’t stick well to other cells -> spread! -> metastasis – (Terry fox  leg to lungs even after amputation)

How do Normal Cells Look Compared to Cancer Cells? Shape, size, nucleus

How does the Cell Cycle look in Cancer Cells How does the Cell Cycle look in Cancer Cells? Chemotherapy affects all cell growth not just cancer cells (affects different parts of cell cycle)

Cells don’t specialize and therefore can’t do their job General Characteristics of Cancer Cells don’t specialize and therefore can’t do their job definitive diagnosis usually requires the examination of tissue which is obtained by biopsy or surgery diagnosed, cancer is usually treated with surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy or oncolytic viruses (still in research phase)

What are Some Signs of Skin cancer? 1. irregular border 2. large 3. Strange colour 4. Asymmetrical 5. Its changing

What are some Common Causes of Cancer ? SEPTEMBER 27th Genetic factors (colorectal, breast etc) Carcinogen (cancer causing agents –environmental etc) Radiation exposure Ultraviolet B radiation from the sun Various chemicals in cigarettes Asbestos fibres (when released) High fat, salt and sugar diets (liver, stomach, esophageal) HPV (human papilloma virus)-linked to cervical cancer

MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CANCER CELLS AND NORMAL CELLS STRUCTURE

How does Cancer progress?
