Designs that Shake Society by Carrie Woodward and Sam Flynn 1 March 2016 In the 21st century consumerism has become a knowledgeable part in society. Increasing advertisements in everywhere we look, sometimes the propaganda of consumption is so strong that we forgot our own values. The consumerist identifies us by what garments we wear, the vehicles we drive, what gadgets we possess, all these things help to give a visual value of ourselves.

Sculpture and Film Maker Barbara Kruger American Born 1945 Artist Writer Graphic Designer Sculpture and Film Maker Barbara Kruger is an American artist born in New Jersey, her themes are about society, the economy, politics, gender and culture. Kruger’s concepts draw out as anti-propaganda in a form of conceptual art.

Influences and Connections Krugers influences were artists such as Andy Warhol and John Baldessari. Her other influences were of conceptual art and the feminist movement. She’s influenced many other artists and various movements. A link to Kruger's approach is found in the artwork of Shepard Fairey.

Barbara Kruger ‘I shop therefore I am’ 1987 Kruger designed the image ‘I shop therefore I am’ designed in 1987’, which is know as one of her greatest art work. It was designed on photographic silkscreen vinyl, 111 x 113 inches and on display at Mary Boone Gallery in New York. In the 17th century French philosopher Rene Descartes produced ‘I think therefore I am’. Kruger made a parody of this. Krugers images have forms which are simple. The colours are black, white and red, which is notable in her work. Black and white photos are overlaid with bold italics text in the typeface Futura, which is commonly found in advertising typography, and catches a direct communication with the viewer. Kruger was influenced by the designs of the Russian Constructivists, in particular Alexander Rodchenko. The way the image is presented reinforces it’s message. The design is provocatively suggestive, the card is held up as if the person is self promoting themselves. But we can also question, who ‘l’ is referring too.
