The Nervous System
Neurology The study of the nervous system. Controls all other body systems.
Three Main Parts of the Nervous System Cerebro-spinal Peripheral Autonomic
Controls mental function Voluntary functions Senses The Cerebro-Spinal Controls mental function Voluntary functions Senses Muscles, movements, facial expression
Peripheral System Makes up sensory and nerve fibers that extend from brain and spinal cord to entire body.
The Autonomic System Functions without conscious effort. Example, Heart, blood vessels, metabolism, etc.
LUNGS The largest mass of nerve tissue in the body.
The Brain Weighs about 44-48 ounces.
The Spinal Cord Originates in the brain, extends the length of the trunk and is protected by the spinal column.
The Primary cell of the Nervous System is the Neuron or Nerve Cell
Dendrites Part of the cell body which receives messages from the neurons.
Nerves Long white cords that make up fibers that carry messages to and from various parts of the body.
Axon Is that part of the cell body which sends messages to other neurons, glands, or muscles.
Cranial Nerves The fifth- also called trifacial or trigeminal is the largest cranial. Chewing is controlled by this nerve.
Cranial Nerves The Seventh Cranial nerve controls the muscles of the face.
Cranial Nerves The eleventh Cranial Nerve affects the muscles of the back and neck and the scalp.
The Median Nerve Supplies the arm and hand.
