DO NOW! •To what degree is rhetoric used in a literary text? Rhetorical question REPETITION Anaphora
RHETORIC USED IN A LITERARY TEXT A figure of speech becomes a device in rhetoric when it is aimed at persuading the readers or listeners. EXAMPLE: We see Upton Sinclair in his novel “The Jungle” from chapter 14 used anaphora: Yet the soul of Ona was not dead--the souls of none of them were dead, but only sleeping; and now and then they would waken, and these were cruel times. p5 Anaphora is a device where the same word or phrase is repeated at regular intervals to achieve a rhetorical effect.
LEARNING TARGET “Romeo and Juliet” Shakespeare “To Kill a Mocking Bird” Harper Lee “The Necklace” Guy de Maupassant “Ain’t I a Woman” Sojourner Truth “Frankenstein” Mary Shelley “The Odyssey” Homer “Night” Elie Wiesel “Animal Farm” George Orwell “The Giver” Lois Lowery •I can identify authors who use rhetoric to advance a point.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? This lesson will ask me to analyze the rhetoric of a literary text. Rhetoric, is a tool for writers and orators which empowers them to convince their readers and listeners about their point of view. Often, we find rhetoric examples in religious sermons and political speeches. They aim to make comparisons, to evoke tender emotions, to censure rivals and all this is done to persuade listeners.
TASK: Text Dependent Questions “The Jungle” 1. Towards the end of the chapter, the author spends some time describing the child, Antanas. What makes this child the “least unfortunate member of that family”? 2. In the second paragraph, the author uses the phrase, “ingenious apparatus”. What does this mean as it is used in the text? What is the irony in the use of this word? 3.In the third paragraph, the duties of the job are described. For example, it says, “the meat would be shoveled into carts, and the man who did the shoveling would not trouble to lift out a rat even when he saw one…” What does this imply about the people forced to work these jobs? Use evidence from the text to support your response. 4.In paragraph 6, the author describes the situation as a game. Why does he choose to make this sort of comparison? 5. What are the “unseen enemies” mentioned in the last line of the chapter?
