24th World Scout Jamboree What? When? Where? Theme? Programme? www.2019wsj.org LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

What? A World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) is a gathering of Scouts and Guides from all over the world for an exciting programme of global development, peace, cultural understanding, adventure, friendship and fun. What does a Jamboree experience look like? World Scout Jamboree - Japan LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

When? Jamboree dates: 22 July to 2 August 2019 The UK is also likely to include pre/post event and Home (or hosted hospitality) so the exact arrival and departure dates are likely to be up to 5 days before and after the actual Jamboree dates. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Where? The Summit Bechtel Reserve is located in Glen Jean, West Virginia. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is a world class and sustainable Jamboree site comprised of more than 14,000 acres (5,667 ha) of beautiful forested mountains adjacent to more than 70,000 acres (28,328 ha) of national park in the scenic New River Gorge area of West Virginia. 309 mile/497 km from Washington, DC, 540 miles/869 km from Toronto, Canada, 2,186 miles/ 3,521 km from Mexico City,

Where? Some highlights of what the Summit Bechtel Reserve has to offer: Longest combined zip lines in the world (5.45 miles/8.7 kilometers) Longest canopy course in the country (9.55 miles/15.3 kilometers) Largest man-made outdoor climbing facility in the country (218 stations) Top purpose-built mountain biking facility in the country Second-largest outdoor skate park in the country (4.6 acres/1.7 hectares) Second-largest BMX facility in the country (13.7 acres/5.3 hectares) Third-largest combined rifle, shotgun, and pistol shooting venue in the country (more than 250 stations) Third-largest archery range in the country (116 stations) Largest natural outdoor arena in West Virginia (80,000 capacity) Access to one of the top-rated rafting, kayaking, and fishing rivers in the country Access to some of the most popular climbing areas in the country LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Where? The Summit Bechtel Reserve is divided into five base camps for jamboree participants. All contingents will be provided with two-man tents, picnic tables and unit cooking gear in their campsite. Permanent shower houses and latrines are located throughout the base camps. An additional base camp is provided for members of the International Service Team (IST). IST members will live in wall tents and have access to permanent shower houses in latrines in the base camp. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE The World Scout Jamboree will function like a small city with over 45,000 residents. Services include laundry facilities, bank/ATM service, postal service and fire/safety services. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is covered by mobile phone service (AT&T) and offers several spots for Wi-Fi access. Because our jamboree is being hosted in North America, it will be defined by the cultures found in the “New World” countries of Mexico, Canada, and the USA. This jamboree will provide a different view on the Scouting movement LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Climate? The month of July is characterized by warm weather. Daily high temperatures around 79 degrees F/ 26.1 degrees C Daily low temperatures around 62 degrees F/16.6 degrees C Moderate to high humidity. The site typically experiences partly cloudy conditions during the month with the possibility of thunderstorms and rain showers. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Theme: Unlock a new world Unlock a New World, invites you to unlock new adventures, new cultures, and new friendships. “Holding fast to our traditions of conservation and outdoorsmanship, a jamboree in the New World is a jamboree that embraces the growing trend of leadership development and global citizenship that our movement has cultivated.” Because our jamboree is being hosted in North America, it will be defined by the cultures found in the “New World” countries of Mexico, Canada, and the USA. This jamboree will provide a different view on the Scouting movement LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

What to look forward to? WSJ 2019 LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Programme “In general, our intent is to offer the complete World Scout Jamboree experience to which NSOs and youth participants are accustomed, adding the adventure component of the Summit Bechtel Reserve (not all participants may be able to experience all of the following elements due to program capacity and weather).” Sustainability Day program Global Development Village Potential camp-in-camp program opportunities Faith and Beliefs Cultural exhibits LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

The Service element speaks to the ongoing world-wide commitment Scouts make to ensure that they are helping to make our planet a better place.
