Chapter 5 Urine for a great time Excretory System Chapter 5 Urine for a great time

Excretion Sweating is a process of excretion…. When you get hot your body releases sweat to cool you down. TO balance this loss of water out less water is put into your urine. The process by which excess water or wastes are removed from the body Done by: Kidneys, Large Intestine, Skin, Lungs, and liver

The urinary system Main Role is to filter waste products and excess water from the blood and excrete them from the body as urine

Kidneys Filter blood and form urine Nephrons role More than a million of these

Formation of Urine Blood enters the kidneys via artery which then travels into the capillaries Filtering in the Nephron Glomerulus filters the blood Tubule collects the waste Some fluid is reabsorbed

Urination: Excretion of Urine After the kidneys the urine enters the two ureters to travel to the bladder Muscular tubes that keep the urine flowing through peristalsis Once the bladder is halfway full the sphincters release the urine into the urethra

Kidneys and homeostasis They filter blood in the body many times each day and produce urine They control the amount of water and dissolved substances in the blood They secrete hormones that do the following Stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells when more are needed Regulates blood pressure and keeps it in a normal range

Kidney Health You only need one kidney to live a healthy life Issues that can hinder the function of the kidneys are Kidney stones Infections diabetes

Kidney Stones Mineral crystals that form in urine Very painful May need to removed if the ureter is blocked

Infections Very common Urinary tract infection (UTI) If left untreated can create a more serious issue

Diabetes and Dialysis Untreated diabetes can damage the capillaries in the kidneys Blood can no longer be filtered Must get a kidney transplant hemodialysis is a way to filter your blood
