Supersizing Food in the U.S. By: Sam Motz 3rd period

“Supersized” Foods! The blackened prime rib at Liberty Street Brewing Co. weighed 12 oz. with a total of 1280 calories and 108 grams of fat. Hyde Park Grille serves a 25 oz. rib-eye steak that has 2707 total calories and 146 grams of fat Soft-drink companies sell cokes in 1-liter bottles now.

Calories and Portion Sizes The calorie intake has risen from 1854 to 2002 calories per day. Experts say portion sizes are to blame for weight gain in America. Cinnamon buns now come in giant 700 calorie portions. + =

The FOOD Pyramid In multiple surveys only 1 percent of the subjects could correctly identify the serving sizes recommended in the food guide Pyramid. McDonald’s recently introduced supersized french fries that weigh 7 oz. and has 540 calories and 26 grams of fat. In 1950 McDonald’s fries contained only 220 calories and 12 grams of fat due to smaller portion sizes. + / =

More Portion Sizes And Obesity! The portions served by fast food chains and other restaurants these days are far larger than the recommended portion size for most foods. The high calorie and fat content these food portions offer lead to weight gain and even obesity for regular customers One in five Americans is obese Obese- a condition defined as being more than 30 percent above the ideal weight based on height Obesity rates for children have doubled over the past 20 years and Don’t mix!
