Honors Government I hope you had a great long weekend! Now it’s time to talk about POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES

In your opinion, what are the 3 most important characteristics of Classical Liberalism and why do you think those are the most important?

What is Classical Liberalism?? Classsical liberalism= The belief in liberty that formed the ideological and theoretical basis of U.S. Government. Rights do not come from government Certain rights are natural rights (we get them because we are human) Key characteristics are 1. Limited government 2. Rule of law 3. Avoidance of arbitrary or discretionary power 4.Sancitity of private property and freely made contracts 5. Personal responsibility

Types of Liberalism Classical 20th Century Philosophy of Founding Fathers Government’s job is to protect natural rights, nothing more and nothing less 20th Century Less emphasis on economic liberty Believed government should regulate economy

Vocabulary Liberalism- a set of beliefs that includes the advocacy of positive government action to improve the welfare of individuals, support for civil rights, and tolerance for political and social change

Vocabulary Republic- a form of government in which sovereignty rests with the people, as opposed to a king or monarch

Vocabulary Conservatism- A set of beliefs that includes a limit for the national government in helping individuals, support for traditional values and lifestyles, and a cautious response to change.

Vocabulary Libertarianism – a political ideology based on skepticism or opposition towards almost all government activities.

Vocabulary Ideology- a comprehensive set of beliefs about the nature of people and about the role of government.
