What represents Maine? The flag of the state of Maine Shows the state coat of arms on a blue field. In the center of the shield, a moose head sits under a large pine tree. The farmer is a symbol as pride in Maine's agricultural roots. Also the sailor represents Maine's strong tie to the seas. The North Star represents the state motto: Dirigo ("I Lead") and also shows guidance.

Who is Sir Ferdinando Gorges? This is Sir Ferdinando Gorges, he is the founder of Maine. No one knows for sure when he was born except for he was born in the month of July in 1565 and died on May 24, 1647. He was granted ownership of Maine along with Captain John Mason. In 1629 Mason and Gorges decided to divide the land, with Mason taking control over the west and naming it New Hampshire. Gorges took over the east. In 1635, he was named Governor-General of all New England. 4 years later, he was granted an exclusive grant in the Province of Maine by King Charles himself. But it was all for nothing because after his death in 1647, the British declared his grant invalid.

Climate and Religions Maine usually has a very humid and windy climate. On occasion, when it rains it is most of the time really bad and lasts a long time Most, if not all, of the residents in Maine at the time were puritans. Puritans were a group of English reformed protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries. They sought out to “purify” the Church of England from its “catholic” practices

Foods and Education Most people ate a lot of salads as their main meals. They often included anchovies, capers, and wine for extra taste and flavor Most children could go to school and they learned about whatever religion they practiced along with simple classes need to get into college. Boys could attend college, but girls could not

Interesting facts Children from the 1600s often played hide-and-go-seek or tag in their free time Girls also played with their homemade corn husk dolls 2016- 90% of the nation's toothpick supply comes from Maine 1600s- More than 75% of Maine’s Indians died of European disease in 1616-1619. This time was called the “The Great Dying” The nation’s first sawmill was made in Maine, 1623
