# 8 – Martin Van Buren First President born in the United States of America (after the revolutionary War) Attended Kinderhook Academy At the age of 14 he began to study law. At age 21 he was admitted to the bar. (lawyer) 1807: Hannah Hoes. 1816-19: Attorney General of New York 1821-28: U.S. Senator from New York

#8 – Van Buren 1837: Panic of 1837. People begin to panic and exchange their paper money for gold and silver. Banks run out of money and go out of business. 90% of all businesses fail in the east. Known as “Martin Van Ruin” – blamed for the recession. Although it was Jackson who destroyed the Bank of the US. Unable to run a second term.
