CASTLES History Science - Materials Geography 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 Norman Castles - Finding out what motte and bailey castles and keep and bailey castles are and how they are different - Examining the strengths and weaknesses of motte and bailey castles, and keep and bailey castles - Discussing what it would have been like to live in Norman Britain 2 The Structure of a Medieval Castle - Identifying the defensive features of a castle, such as moats, keeps and drawbridges - Examining the purposes of a castle’s features - Discussing what happened when a castle was under siege 3 Who Lived in a Medieval Castle - Discovering the roles and jobs of a castle’s inhabitants - Identifying the roles of medieval people and their power - Exploring a day in the life of different medieval people 4 Why did the Peasants Revolt? - Discovering the timeline of key events - Finding out what our taxes are spent on today 5 The Tower of London Through Time - Exploring important dates in the Tower’s history - Identifying some of the uses of the Tower - Describing how the Tower has changed over time Geography 1 Why were castles built on hills? - Naming land features - Discussing why a location was chosen - Identifying the resources that can be found in land features 2 Capital Cities Castles! - Identifying the UK on a world map - Identifying and locating the four countries of the UK and their capital cities - Examining why a capital city castle was built in a location. Science - Materials 1 Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made (Y1) Investigating properties of materials for the DT castle building (e.g. waterproof materials to line the moat, strongest materials for the walls) , Describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials. 2 compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties. CASTLES Music 1 Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, English – 3 Little Pigs, A range of poetry and rhyme, followed by fiction to include pattern and rhyme. 1 Use some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence [Wr] 2 Write own name and other things such as labels and captions [Wr] 3 Attempt to write short sentences in meaningful contexts [Wr] 4 Understand the role of the question mark in punctuation, and form question marks correctly in their own work. 5 Continue a rhyming string [R] Segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together and know which letters represent some of them [R] 6 Use the word ‘because’ in simple explanations.. 7 Spelling & phonics Grapheme and phoneme correspondances covering phases 2, 3, 4 and 5. In addition to, children will learn to spell the Year 1 common Exception words. 8 Reading – Children will learn to use their phonic knowledge to decode, focus on comprehension and inference… DT- Design and build a castle 1 Selecting and using a variety of materials for purpose. Working safely with tools and evaluating. RE 1 Why are times special in the Christian Faith? Looking closely at times of celebrations, birthdays, Harvest, baptism and Christmas. Maths 1 Place value 2 Addition / Subtraction PSHE/British Values 1 To know about and develop an understanding of human rights and democracy. Look at how things have changed over time. PE 1 Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities Computing 1 Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science.
