Bush’s administration? Objective: Students will identify the major events that occurred during Pres. George H.W. Bush’s years as President. Standards: 4.1a, 4.1b, 4.1c, 4.1d, 4.1e Do Now/Key People: Boris Yeltsin (p.992), Saddam Hussein (p.993). Work Period: History video, “Berlin Wall: Deconstructed”, Graphic Organizer. Homework #4.15: p.992 “Analyzing Visuals” Persian Gulf War #1&2 Close: “Reading Check: Examining, Why did President Bush take action when Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait?” p.993, History video “Operation Desert Storm”.

MAJOR EVENTS DURING THE BUSH YEARS… THE SOVIET UNION COLLAPSES (P.991-992) Aug. 1991 officials arrested the former communist leader, Gorbachev and a coup began. The new president, Boris Yeltsin announced the end of the communist rule in Soviet Union. Russia was now a democracy. As a result, the Berlin Wall was torn down. TIANANMEN SQUARE (P.992-993) China’s communist leaders wanted to remain in power but many citizens didn’t want that. A protest was held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing and Chinese troops sent tanks and soldiers to intervene resulting in many deaths of protesters. PANAMA (P.993) A treaty was signed in 1977 saying that by 2000 the U.S. would leave control of the canal to Panama. It didn’t work because of Panama’s dictator, Manuel Noriega. The U.S. sent troops in, removed Noriega & helped Panama set up a democratic govn’t. THE PERSIAN GULF WAR (P.993) Saddam Hussein’s army wanted to invade oil rich country of Kuwait. This angered the U.S.-they tried to get the United Nations to order Iraq to leave Kuwait because it was interfering with oil shipment to the U.S. Iraq refused leading to war w Iraq called the Persian Gulf War.
