Luke 23:5 He stirs up the people by his teaching Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Is 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 2 Thes 3:16 may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Matt 11:28-29 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 23:5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 23:5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 12:50-53 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. Matt 10:34 Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword… a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household. John 15:18-20 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first… That is why the world hates you… If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.

Luke 23 – War and Peace John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

Luke 23 – War and Peace John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 22:67-71 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

Luke 23 – War and Peace Luke 23:33-34, 44-46 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”… It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke 23 – War and Peace indifference 8 Herod… was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 14 [Pilate] said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.

Luke 23 – War and Peace irrelevance 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

Luke 23 – War and Peace intolerance 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.  23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.

Luke 23 – War and Peace Rom 12:18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone Matt 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God 5:23 First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift 1 Peter 2:15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.  3:15 …give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

Luke 23 – War and Peace Indifferent - 49 the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching Irrelevant - 40 But the other criminal… said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” Intolerant - 50 there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action.

Don’t be crushed or in despair – pray and be a peace-bringer. Luke 23 – War and Peace Jesus brings peace. But vertical peace and internal peace do not always translate into horizontal peace. The deity and death of Jesus Christ bring division, maybe even in your family. Your loved ones may act with indifference, may mock as irrelevant, or may oppose with intolerance. Don’t be crushed or in despair – pray and be a peace-bringer.
