Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy: Entering an Era of Increased Expectations for Efficacy Douglas K. Rex, MD Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Volume 12, Issue 3, Pages 458-462 (March 2014) DOI: 10.1016/j.cgh.2013.11.003 Copyright © 2014 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
Figure 1 The 3 criteria for judging bowel preparation are interrelated. For example, efficacy is reduced when preparations are poorly tolerated and cannot be fully ingested. Safety is related to direct toxicity of the preparation, but also less efficacious preparations are unsafe because they impair detection during colonoscopy and necessitate early repeat procedures. Poorly tolerated preparations reduce willingness to repeat procedures, which reduces both efficacy and safety with regard to cancer prevention.
