What is it and why do author’s use it? Allusion What is it and why do author’s use it?

Definition a reference to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; reader is expected to be familiar with it (famous person, book, film, etc.). very often an indirect reference to a famous person, place, event in history, or another piece of literature

Why use it? With allusions, the reference isn’t explained, so that it can convey the flattering assumption that the reader shares the writer’s learning or inside knowledge.

Allusions in Art Artist: Banksy What allusion(s) do you see?

Allusions in Art Here the artist is alluding to The Wizard of Oz. Anyone who has seen the film would know that Dorothy is a dewy-eyed, innocent young girl; she’d never be carrying around anything nefarious in her basket. By using Dorothy, Banksy is trying to show the audience that stop-and-frisk style inspections have gone too far.
