*English Colonization *Side Note *English Colonization Motivations for founding the English colonies in America: Religious Freedom Riches Land Commercial trade

TYPES of English Colonies 1. PROPRIETARY…was land granted to an individual or group by the British crown and that were allowed full rights of self-government. 2. CHARTER… was land chartered to an individual or group by the British crown  and that were allowed to establish a charter or set of laws that governed the colony for the benefit of England. 3. ROYAL… land administered by a royal governor and council appointed by the British crown, and having are representative assembly elected by the people.

*Roanoke Known as “The Lost Colony” -The 1st English attempt at settlement in America off the coast of N. Carolina. -Began as a Proprietary colony for Walter Raleigh from Queen Elizabeth in 1585. -After dropping off settlers for a second time, they didn’t receive supplies from England for 3 years due to the war with Spain. -With Gov. John White’s return after 3 years, the colony had mysteriously disappeared. Known as “The Lost Colony”
