“THE ILLUSION OF UNFAIRNESS” MIRAGE – PART 5 “THE ILLUSION OF UNFAIRNESS” *FAIR = free from bias, dishonesty and injustice

1. IS LIFE FAIR?

A. We live in a FALLEN world Romans 5:12 – When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

B. We live with FREE will Deuteronomy 30:19 – Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!

Isaiah 9:7 - He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne… #2. Isaiah 9:7 - He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne…

I’m totally fine with favoritism as long as I’m the favorite. A. Is God IMPARTIAL? I’m totally fine with favoritism as long as I’m the favorite.

Acts 10:34 - I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.    Romans 9:15 - For God said to Moses, “I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”

B. Is God HONEST?

Numbers 23:19 – God is not a man, so he does not lie Numbers 23:19 – God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? OR    Philippians 4:19 – And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

C. Is God JUST?

Galatians 6:7 – Don’t be misled - you cannot mock the justice of God Galatians 6:7 – Don’t be misled - you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.  OR    Jeremiah 12:1-2 - Lord, you always give me justice when I bring a case before you. So let me bring you this complaint: Why are the wicked so prosperous? Why are evil people so happy? 2 You have planted them, and they have taken root and prospered. Your name is on their lips, but you are far from their hearts.

3. THE ILLUSION OF AN UNFAIR GOD “What I believe about God is the most important thing about me.”

Matthew 20:1-16 - For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the landowner who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work. 3 “At nine o’clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing. 4 So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day. 5 So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing. 6 “At five o’clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, ‘Why haven’t you been working today?’ 7 “They replied, ‘Because no one hired us.’ “The landowner told them, ‘Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.’

8 “That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first. 9 When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage. 10 When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage. 11 When they received their pay, they protested to the owner, 12 ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’ 13 “He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage? 14 Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. 15 Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’ 16 “So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”

A. We will struggle with fair when we COMPARE Galatians 6:4-5 – Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. 5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

B. We will struggle with fair when we forget the AGREEMENT John 16:33 – Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

C. We will struggle with fair when we think we know what’s BEST Isaiah 55:8 - “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”

D. We will struggle with fair when we don’t appreciate God’s GRACE

Ephesians 2:4-9 - But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
