Conducting and interpreting feedback surveys

Why are we doing surveys? Quality improvement Accountability (> for police) People cannot vote with their feet Experiences of people To show balance of national / local perceptions Planning purposes – coherence with single outcome agreements Engaging interactively with communities Doing WITH communities, rather than FOR communities

How are we doing surveys? Lack of peer review in survey design (and not early enough) Need to understand sources of bias Consult design experts right at the start! Consideration of ethics – usually done in NHS, but often not considered in police surveys Discussion focus groups + face-to-face surveys?

What do results really tell us? Influenced by design and choice of questions Applying statistical analysis can draw out additional findings and interpretations Need for additional analytical capacity (role for SIPR in partnership approach?) Performance assessments / impact & Research Excellence Framework

What do we do with results? Importance of publishing the outcomes A starting point for further dialogue Importance of writing style to maximise accessibility
