Types of Poems: A NARRATIVE POEM tells a story. An EPIC POEM is a type of long narrative poem that has a HERO and often FANTASTICAL CREATURES. A LYRIC POEM expresses THOUGHTS and FEELINGS. A CONCRETE POEM forms a shape on the page.
Poems have lines and stanzas (paragraphs). Let them be as flowers, always watered, fed, guarded, admired, but harnessed to a pot of dirt. I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed, 5 clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
Read the poem four times: 1.) For enjoyment - don’t worry about understanding 2.) For mood and meaning- What is happening, what’s the mood? Figurative language 3.) For structure- rhyme scheme, word position, line length, etc. 4.) For the whole picture- put all the above together
Sensory details are words that appeal to your 5 senses: Sight Hearing Taste Touch Smell
Mood = How the reader feels while reading Tone = How the author feels about the subject
