Apply the Coherence Principle Psychological Reasons Apply the Coherence Principle Do not overload the learner’s cognitive load Preventing distraction, disruption and seduction Do not include extraneous sounds as background music or unrelated environmental sounds Do not use none-essential graphics/video clips Present content in lean text/narration that presents the main points Limits of Coherence Principle: if motivation is an higher level problem of the e-learning system, then the coherence principle should be over ruled

Apply the Personalization Principle Psychological Reasons Apply the Personalization Principle Engage learner Help learners to make sense out of the content by the themselves Create relevant environment to learners Speak in conversational language by using “you”, “your”, “I” etc. Coaching provided via conversational narration from onscreen characters (Agent) Visually realistic or line art Dialog via audio narration Voice natural and conversational Serve a valid instructional purpose Limits of Personalization principle: Personalization degree should be limited by environment or condition of learner (I.e. narration cannot be used in low bandwidth)
