TICTOC BOF IETF-70 Dec 4, 2007 TICTOC-70 1

What is TICTOC ? Next generation timing distribution in IETF Timing = frequency and/or time TICTOC-70 2

Recap - the Prague BOF A BOF was held in Prague problem statement, or "there is an interesting problem" NTP and 1588 presentations, or "the problem IS solvable" other SDOs, or "the problem is not being solved elsewhere" open mike, or "do we want to solve this problem here?". Nearly universal agreement on all four points However, many of those present felt that more modularization was required more focus was required the precise goals of TICTOC were not clear enough Could not achieve agreement as to charter TICTOC-70 3

Recap - since Prague No BOF was held in Chicago it was felt that insufficient progress had been made there was concern that there was still not agreement as to goals Mailing list has been active We now have 4 1/2 IDs : Problem Statement draft-bryant-tictoc-probstat-01 Modularization Draft draft-stein-tictoc-modules-00 Framework Draft draft-frost-packet-timing-framework-00 RAN Synchronization Requirements draft-zhou-tictoc-ran-sync-req-00 4 1/2. 1588 over MPLS draft-ronc-ptp-mpls-00 (submitted to PWE3 WG) TICTOC-70 4

Today's BOF FOCUS ON CHARTER (new version available on unofficial TICTOC web site) In order to understand the charter, we need to understand: what a 1588 profile is the relationship between TICTOC and NTP WGs why AD and TD and master selection is important the three use cases TICTOC-70 5

Discussion Are the use cases clear, necessary, and sufficient ? Are the goals achievable ? Should TICTOC take on the NG-NTP work ? When should discovery work be done ? Is there sufficient support for the new charter ? How many people intend to actively participate ? TICTOC-70 6
