A2 Historical enquiry: India and the British Empire, 1757-1947

Curzon’s vice-royalty and the Morley-Minto reforms L.O. To be able to explain how Viceroy Curzon provoked an increase in nationalism To assess how much of a concession the Indian Councils Act 1909 was Evaluate the progress and strength of nationalism by 1914

Viceroy Curzon He read for a classical degree at Oxford and soon became the leading tory undergraduate of his day Curzon struck his Oxford contemporaries as a man destined for a major political career Most people were impressed by his wit, his eloquence, and his hard work, but others found him too verbose and self-assured. Acquaintances discerned an air of superiority that inspired those lines which journalists quoted against him for the rest of his life: ‘My name is George Nathaniel Curzon, I am a most superior person. My cheek is pink, my hair is sleek, I dine at Blenheim once a week.’ Viceroy for two successive terms: 1899-1903 and 1903-1905 It’s the 2nd term that ruined his reputation and that of the British government in India

Curzon Read Doc 6 – what is Curzon predicting? What does this suggest to you about how he will deal with Congress? Curzon inflames opinion in India – answer the questions on your sheet to explain how

Curzon Curzon tried to be high handed and partition Bengal – the heartland of the INC – in order to try and neutralise Congress There is an outcry from the Hindus and Muslims begin to express concerns too When the Liberal government take power in 1906 they are faced with the problems of his legacy – they attempt to diffuse it by cancelling partition (a success for India) and the Morley-Minto reforms (beginnings of representative government)

Task Write an assessment of how nationalism has changed by this point/what they’ve achieved so far (q10 on sheet)
