What is Engineering “The profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied with judgment to develop ways to use, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind” ABET (The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Techology)

What is Engineering Important responsibilities on an engineer: #1: Develop Judgment necessary to put knowledge into practical purposes help mankind in economical ways #2 use imagination to conceive original solutions to problems Look at history of engineering accomplishments and errors (learn from mistakes) to develop insights. #3: Predict performance and cost of new devices or processes Ie: technological advances

What are the skills of an engineer? Important skills needed. Math – Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. Science – Will vary with engineering discipline however Physics and Chemistry are common to most. Technology Engineering – Learn to be creative and critical thinkers, Problem solving through design. English – Must have the ability to articulate with others through writing, presentations and speaking. Global consideration The appropriate world language.

What are different types of engineering careers? Branches of engineering

Some of the Most Common Engineering Careers Environmental Engineer – Develop methods and products to improve or maintain the environment to make it a safer place for humans and other species of life. (ex: Harvard Nanoscavengers!)

Computer Engineers – work on both the hardware and the software of computers. The majority of electronics have computers with computer component as part of the product. (automobiles!)

Chemical Engineer – Develop products to use in our society using the principles of chemistry and physics such as detergents, paints, plastics, pharmaceuticals, food products, etc.

Some of the Most Common Engineering Careers 4.)Mechanical Engineer – Design, development, production, operation, and service of machines and mechanical devices and parts.

5.)Electrical Engineer – Design, development, testing, of electrical systems. From household appliances to rocket guidance systems.

6.) Civil Engineer – The oldest branch of engineering responsible for designing and supervising the construction of infrastructure such as roads, building, Airports, bridges, tunnels, water and sewage systems.

The Design Process (A Review) Define The Problem Clearly Begin Production Redesign as needed 1 3 5 6 4 2 7 8 Research the Problem/Gather Info Communicate the Solution You can restart at any step if revisions are needed. Develop Solutions Evaluate or test the Solution Choose The Best Solution Make a Prototype

The First Tower Challenge Execute through engineering process and write on a a separate sheet of paper!

Challenge Bridges A. Complete Webquests (Preliminary Research) B. PowerPoint Overview of Truss Bridges (Part one) and Forces C. Cut out and make components D. PowerPoint Forces on truss bridges (Part two) E. Assemble bridge truss (sides) F. Test components G. Assemble bridge H. Test bridge

Our first challenge - Bridges BRIDGES Webquest Fill in worksheet using the link to the site below. http://www2.newton.k12.ma.us/~mike_whitman/bridges/bridges_webquest_task.htm
