HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation QXF Coil WG Meeting December 2, 2014 Dan Cheng
Coil Impregnation Status HQ Coil 19 was impregnated Coil impregnation was the first full-scale run of the long (~3.7 m) VPI chamber Checking heater control offsets, process temps, equipment function Impregnation was designed to test the updated QXF processes using an HQ coil Used old-style HQ trace (0.001” thick polyimide only), not perforated, but only a single layer D. Coil Impregnation Cycle Coil pre-heated to 110°C and pumped down overnight Pressure based out ~17 mTorr Temp offset was ~25°C (actual temp reached was ~85°C) Epoxy mixed and preheated to 50-60°C De-gassed to 300 mTorr Epoxy fill; approximately 3 hours Fixture vacuum at ~1000 mTorr Cycle vacuum to atmospheric pressure 1x Observed leak at the top reservoir fill tube; did not repeat Soak under atmospheric pressure overnight Start cure cycle Incorporated offsets obtained by the pre-heat cycle to ensure correct temperatures were reached D. Long VPI Infrastructure Horizontal loading Tiltable ~30° during curing Accommodates ~3.8m long coils (was designed initially for LHQ) D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014

Post Impregnation: Inner Layer, RE Generally good fill in cable turns Impregnated glass fibers showed an anomaly in this location D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014
Post Impregnation: Inner Layer, LE Non-perforated traces did not appear to fill well between endshoe Local unfilled areas of turns Note: local unfilled areas are likely only surface-area effects. See presentations on 9/19/2013 and 11/21/2013 for reference. https://plone.uslarp.org/MagnetRD/WeeklyUpdates/2013/2013-09-19/130919%20HQ_coil23_25.pptx https://plone.uslarp.org/MagnetRD/WeeklyUpdates/2013/2013-11-21/131121%20HQ_coil18_Impreg_summary.pptx D. Post Impregnation: Outer Layer, LE/RE Local unfilled areas of turns D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014
Outer Layer Instrumentation Areas Pre-soldered PH wires Epoxy removed for VT wire connections Cracked epoxy (glass-filled, but thick) D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014
Outer Layer Instrumentation Areas Un-reinforced PH wire was damaged when removing flashing D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014
Inner Layer Instrumentation Areas VT, PH wires will be attached with new cable D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Dec 2, 2014
D. Cheng - HQ Coil 19 Test Impregnation Impregnation Summary HQ Coil 19 was used to test the operation and the processes to be employed in the MQXFS coils Lack of perforations in the traces, however, seem to have caused incomplete filling, though the bulk of the coil is likely fully filled Some operations will be slightly modified to optimize post-impregnation activities Long VPI infrastructure has been tested and qualified Coil impregnation infrastructure is ready for MQXFS coils D.
