Boy Scouts of America Coming in 2011: Robotics Merit Badge…Be Prepared! The Science Mission Directorate led a coordinated NASA presence at the Boy Scouts of America’s 2010 National Scout Jamboree held in Fort A.P. Hill, VA from July 27—August 3rd. ESMD, SOMD, and many Centers also took part in the effort. The BSA is celebrating 100 years of scouting, and attendance soared over 43,000 youth scouts and adult leaders as well as another 50,000 visitors. In the NASA tent were volunteers from across the agency, meeting the scouts and leaders, and sharing information and exhibits including models of MER, LRO, and JWST, a Phoenix EDL “6 Minutes of Terror” game, GSFC’s Magic Planet display, GRC’s Journey to Tomorrow trailer, ESMD’s Exploration Experience, an Astro Camp, and a Robotics area provided by Aerospace Educators Services Project (AESP). A new, PSD/Mars-sponsored Robotics Merit Badge will be available for scouts in 2011. It may become the first Merit Badge in BSA’s history that is fully obtainable online…still TBD. Stay tuned!
