Warren’s Blacking Factory A shoe polish (“blacking”) factory where Dickens glued labels onto bottles of polish. He endured harsh conditions, was lonely and felt abandoned. Dickens never forgot the humiliation and alienation he felt during this time (many of his novels feature orphans and abandoned children).
