Quietly take a seat and write down the standard of the day: SS7G8 - The student will describe the diverse cultures of the people who live in Southwest Asia (Middle East)

Bell-Ringer Complete the following in your DBQ notebook: Look over all of the document analysis sheets. Which documents are similar and which documents are different? What specific categories can these documents be placed in?

Document D Review 1.) What was the ghazu? What was the ummah? 2.) What was the purpose of the ghazu in the years before Islam? 3.) How did Islam change the way the ghazu worked? 4.) Why were the Arabs able to conquer much of Persia and parts of Byzantium? 5.) How does this document explain how Islam spread so quickly?

Doc D Answer 1 A ghazu was a raid on another Arab tribe. The ummah was the Muslim community of believers. back

Doc D Answer 2 To raid another Arab clan and take their property. Resources were tight and this was a way for Arab clans to survive. back

Doc D Answer 3 Muhammad did not allow Muslims to raid other Muslim groups so he changed the rules so now only they could raid non-Muslims. This forced Muslims to stretch their territory further into Persia, Byzantium, and beyond. back

Doc D Answer 4 The Persians and Byzantines had weakened each other with constant fighting, so it was easier for the Muslims to win. back

Doc D Answer 5 Military Conquest

Document E Review 1.) What responsibility is given to the caliph in the first duty? 2.) What responsibilities are listed in duties 2,3, and 4? 3.) In American society, who is responsible for these tasks? 4.) What was the Pact? 5.) How does the document help explain how Islam spread so quickly?

Doc E Answer 1 Religious duties having to do with keeping the teachings of Muhammad pure. back

Doc E Answer 2 Settling legal disputes, military defense, and protecting the rights of servants. back

Doc E Answer 3 People in government (military, judges, police, executive branch, etc). back

Doc E Answer 4 An agreement allowing conquered non-Muslims to continue to practice their own religion as long as they paid a tax called the jizyah. back

Doc E Answer 5 Political Order

Buckets Take some time now to think about what your buckets would be called and which documents go into those buckets.

Introduction A good introduction should always include: A hook – something that grabs the readers attention. Background information. Stating the question with key terms defined. Thesis and road map (your buckets).

Chickenfoot

Body Paragraphs Baby Thesis for Bucket Evidence (Supporting details from documents with document citation) Argument (Connecting your evidence to the thesis. This is where you explain how the quote explains how Islam spread so quickly) You MUST have between 3-4 body paragraphs. A body paragraph is always ONE topic (Do not include two topics in the same paragraph). Always save your most important thesis reason for the LAST body paragraph. Use TRANSITION WORDS to link between body paragraphs (Ex - Next, Last, Finally, Also).

Conclusion Restate your main idea and discuss your reasons for the quick spread of Islam) NEVER end your paper with “In conclusion” because the reader should realize it is your conclusion.

Work Session By yourself, begin planning your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion outline. There is to be no talking as your essay is your own words. If you need anything, raise your hand.

Closing What questions remain about the writing process and the DBQ essay?
