Roman Persecution of Christians
Today’s Objective Students will be able to explain why the Roman Empire persecuted Christians. Why is this important? Christianity began as a small religious group 2,000 years ago, and has become the largest religion in the world. It is important to know the history of how that happened.
Prior Knowledge: You learned last year that Christianity began about 2,000 years ago. It began about 30-35 A.D. when an itinerant (traveling) preacher named Jesus began preaching a new message to people around Jerusalem. At that time, Jerusalem was part of the Roman Empire. Jesus was Jewish, as were all of his early followers. Jesus’s teachings upset both the Jewish leadership of the region and the Romans. He was seen as a troublemaker. So, Jesus was put to death. Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God, and that he rose from the dead.

Prior Knowledge 2: All of Jesus’ early followers were Jewish. Jews who followed Jesus’ teaching were called Christians. At first, to become a Christian, you first had to be Jewish. Later, Paul, who wrote a lot of the New Testament, announced that everyone could become a Christian without first being Jewish. Christianity and Judaism are two of the first monotheistic religions in the world. Monotheism is the belief in one God. People who believe in many gods are called polytheists, or sometimes pagan.
Concept: For several reasons, Christianity was seen as a threat to the Roman Empire. Monotheism (belief in one god) was seen as strange.
