Signal Integration in the Cerebellum: Source of Neuronal Input Imre Jánoki 2016. 11. 15.

Structure of the Cerebellum biggest part of the hindbrain hemispherium cerebelli + vermis cerebelli anterior, posterior, flocculo-nodular lobes 3 pair symmetric pedunculus cerebellaris (superior, middle, inferior)

Inputs – Cerebellar Peduncles superior: output to cerebral cortex middle: input from the pons (pontine nuclei), originated from the cerebral cortex inferior: input from the vestibular nuclei, spinal cord, tegmentum modulatory input from the inferior olivary nucleus monoaminerg afferents

Inputs – functional partellation vestibulocerebellum balance, orientation input from vestibular nuclei, visual, sensory input spinocerebellum fine-tune body and limb movements proprioceptive input from the spinal cord, also visual, auditory input input from trigeminal cranial nerve cerebrocerebellum planning movement about to occur, evaluate sensory info for action, pure cognitive functions input from pons (middle cerebellar peduncles)

Signal integration Mossy fibers Climbing fibers input from pontine nuclei, spinal cord, vestibular nuclei…etc. Climbing fibers input from inferior olivary nucleus (medulla obligata) 1 to 1 Purkinje cell, strong signal

Microzones: defined by Purkinje cells having the same somatotopic receptive field also by the climbing fiber input connecting to the same microzone cerebellar homunculus Signal theories – MARR and ALBUS Some motor learning happens in the cerebellar circuit Climbing fibers carry a „teaching signal” modifying the parallel fiber-Purkinje synapse strenght
