5-Poland and several other countries of became free from the control of the Soviet Union during 1989-90. 6-BY 2005 about 140 countries were holding multi-party elections. 7-More than 80 non-democratic countries have made advances towards democracy since 1980.

Burma gained freedom from colonial rule in 1948. The military rulers of Myanmar refused to recognize the election results.
