Definition States that a leader is to assist their followers in obtaining their goals and providing direction needed. Also making sure that the goals work well with the organization’s.

When to Use Different behaviours for different situations. Example: Situation: Leadership Behaviour: Impact on Followers: Follower lacks self confidence Supportive leadership High confidence to achieve work outcome Outcome: Satisfaction in performance, More effort

Included Leadership Behaviours Directive Leader: Lets subordinates know what is expected of them. Schedules work to be done, and gives specific guidance on how to accomplish tasks. Supportive Leader: Leader is friendly and shows concern for the needs of the followers.

Cont. Leadership Behaviours Participative Leader: Leader consults with group members and uses their suggestions before making a decision. Achievement-Oriented Leader: Leader sets challenging goals and expects followers to perform at their highest level.

Real Life Example Joe ran his own company, graduated University with a MBA, all before joining Sally’s Surplus store. Joe isn’t happy as a front line employee, stocking shelves. He should’ve been promoted two years ago.

Continued The manager receives word of Joe’s problem and decides to make a change. (using achievement –oriented leadership) Joe is promoted to head of sales. Now, Joe works twice as fast, arrives at work early, is motivated, and motivating to others.
