Our school council trip to visit the mayor

introduction We were all excited to visit the mayor and ask him about the things that he got up to on his job. School council had many questions for him that were both job related and personal. Even though he has been elected to be mayor by the councillors of Chorley the job is only in his possession for one year and then the responsibility is passed on to someone else. He absolutely loves being mayor and is sad to resign in may 2014.

An important job can you explain your ‘uniform’? the chain I am wearing has been passed down from generations of mayors so I could wear it today. Have you met any influential people? I have met the queen and the duke of Kent . I hope to meet many more. It is challenging being the major of Chorley? It is a privilege being the mayor of Chorley, I get to meet amazing volunteers that have changed our community.

personal life Do you have any interests or hobbies? I like to walk my dog and watch cricket the television. I used to sometimes play badminton and squash but I gave it up. Gardening is also something I like. What is your full name? John Phillip walker.

uniform Have you got anything in your possession that has been passed down from previous mayors? I have the chain which I were most of the time and the maise that is carried in by the person introducing me on the day. The value of the mayors chain that he wears is a staggering £60,000 The value of the mayoress’ chain is still a great amount of £8,000

The town halls past How much did the town hall cost to build? The town hall cost £19,800 at the time of the build. When was the town hall opened? 1879 What happened on open day? All the school children in Chorley were presented with medals Who was the last mayor? June molloneaux

feelings What does it fell like to be mayor? it’s good, I had been in the council for more than 15 years and I knew it would be my turn soon. Who do you have disagreements with? ‘The majoress’ ,the major is the first citizen of Chorley so everybody agrees with him

We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and got some good answers for the questions we thought of. School council thank miss Langton for arranging our trip to visit the mayor and we all hope that the school will get to do this every year
