Skills in the Construction industry Globally Patrick Atkinson Global Marketing Manager

Agenda Introduction to Saint-Gobain Key focus Growth Markets Construction Industry skills and challenges What’s happening today Training Developments Agenda

Saint-Gobain : a long history… but a modern group

Saint-Gobain, one of the top global one hundred leading industrial corporations Established 1648 Global Leader in the manufacture and distribution of building materials Operations in 59 countries worldwide, 208,000 employees Turnover ~ €45bn Manufacturer of ; Drywall systems & plaster, Insulation Mortars Glass, Pipes Ceramics,

Gypsum based interior partition systems a high growth area sector, in emerging markets We drive the agenda for lightweight building systems globally, the biggest opportunity remains in the emerging markets; Lightweight building systems provide a more sustainable alternative to traditional materials providing speed, comfort and considerable financial benefits

There are a many Construction related Skills which have evolved over generations…. Wall and Floor Tiling Plumbing and Heating Electrical Installations Bricklaying Stonemasonry Painting and Decorating Cabinetmaking Joinery Carpentry Landscape Gardening Refrigeration Metal Roofing Plastering and Dry Wall Systems

Creating beautiful and practical environments….

And when something goes horribly wrong …

There is someone trained to fix it…

So we can move from this…

To this…

And from this….

To an environment which provides a greater standard of living…

The industry’s challenges with skills today… Mature markets Emerging markets Employment in the construction industry not attractive in mature markets to young people because Cyclical Low growth Not ”cool” Hard and “dirty”work Dangerous? Not enough skilled labour to meet the demand Insufficient Govt. supported training programmes Lack of knowledge of the opportunities Lack of recognition of construction skills due to poor regulation

#1.Moving surplus skills from mature markets to emerging markets… Example…One world project, Mumbai India… World largest residential building $340m development Units range from $1.3m to $8.6m - Armani finish The local developers will make $860m from this one project Converted all interior partitions in to drywall ….Lighter, quicker, better performance….3-5 years work on this site alone No local skills. Brought UK/Irish based contractors to India to do the job. Training locals on site. This developer currently has 30M sq meters of floor space to develop – no local skills for drywall system installation.

#2. Attracting young people to our industry Investing in modern training programmes & facilities Managing our employer brands Communicating thought new media Making it “cool” to be a part of building something great Recognising the work of the contractor Sharing knowledge, forums etc. Getting it on the agenda in schools. This situation is replicated across the emerging markets and the local workforce are missing these large opportunities…

Providing training, better and faster… Providing training, better and faster….currently, S-G have 150 training academies globally… but it’s not enough; In order to accelerate the learning programmes, We have introduced several digital training and information tools Digital newsletters for all Need for speed in developing markets Some learning apps for contractors and installers

We are making Virtual Reality a Training Reality… This puts the training where we need it and in the language we need it

Saint-Gobain Gypsum today, mature European markets successfully provide Government backed skills training…

We are working to provide more training in many countries, working with local training schools and training authorities …. 12 % of our business coming from emerging markets in 2013 30% will come from emerging markets in 2017 due to high capital expenditure and market focus particularly on Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, ME and SE Asia

Improving the employer brand. Attracting people to the industry… Improving the employer brand * Attracting people to the industry… * Creating and recognising heroes… * Promoting the value added by education Global competition recognising the work of the drywall contractor

Promoting the “heroes” and communicating with the younger audiences to make it “cool”…

Choosing the most effective social media platforms what types of media can you use on each of the major social networks ? http://infographics.sg/

Summary… Skilled People are key to the economic development in all our markets Particular focus on emerging markets Many new tools to attract, communicate with and train young people The Industry Needs additional support and cooperation from government backed training to facilitate growth….

Training - The backbone of Developing people July 5th, 2013
