The Skeletal system

The skeleton Supports the body, protects internal organs, provides for movement, stores mineral reserves, and provides a site for blood cell formation Skeletal system divided into the axial and appendicular skeleton 206 bones in the adult human skeleton

Structure of bone Bones are a solid network of living cells Bone is surrounded by a tough layer of connective tissue called the periosteum Haversian canal: contain blood vessels and nerves Blood vessels that pass through the periosteum carry oxygen and nutrients to the bone. Compact bone: dense tissue Spongy bone: less dense tissue Near the ends of the where force is applied, spongy bone is organized into structures that resemble the supporting girders in a bridge

Bone marrow Within the bones are cavities that contain a soft tissue called bone marrow. Yellow bone marrow: fat cells Red bone marrow: produces red blood cells Bone Marrow Transplant Red marrow is found mainly in the flat bones such as hip bone, breast bone, skull, ribs, vertebrae and shoulder blades, and in the cancellous ("spongy") material at the proximal ends of the long bones femur and humerus. In cases of severe blood loss, the body can convert yellow marrow back to red marrow in order to increase blood cell production

Joints Place where one bone attaches to another Permit bones to move without damaging one another Depending on the type of movement, a joint is classified as: Immovable (ex. Sutures in your skull) Slightly movable (ex. Joints between vertebra) Freely movable (ex. Ball and socket join in your arm) Ligaments hold bones together in a joint
