Bushfires in Australia: Group discussion task.

The Black Saturday Bushfire Location: Victoria Date: 7 February 2009 – 14 March 2009 Area destroyed: 450,000+ ha Number of deaths: 173 (known) Number of homes destroyed: 2,029+ houses, 2,000 other structures

Task 1: Bushfires in Australia. You are going to work in groups to research the “Black Saturday Bushfires” You will have access to the internet and some printed accounts of the fire.

Task 2: Bushfires in Australia. Lesson starter: You have to pretend that you were there during the Black Saturday bushfire. You must write an eye witness account.

What makes a good news paper report? Task 2: Bushfires in Australia. What makes a good news paper report?

Task 2: What make a good report Factual information Good spelling, grammar Pictures as well as text Good order – intro, main, conclusion. Similar facts together. Good layout. Columns Interviews, quotes, eye witness accounts. Bold title. Evidence use. Look like a news paper article. Good overview – look at what happened as well as aftermath.

Task 2: Bushfires in Australia. Success Criteria. Your article must be in the style of a news paper report. It must be a report on the Black Saturday Bushfire. It should answer the following Q’s What is a bushfire? How are Bushfires caused? Why is Australia so badly affected? It should have information about the “Black Saturday” bushfire. It should contain two eye witness quotes. One from a fire fighter and one from a survivor.

Task 3: Bushfires in Australia. Green pen marking. You must go over your work and used a coloured pen to correct spelling and grammar mistakes. It does not have to be green just a colour that is different from what you used.
